The series took advantage of the fever generated by the Buffalo Bill’s Wild West tour, which toured Europe between 1902 and 1906. In France, the show caused such a deep cultural impact that the cinema felt the need to replicate the Western genre with a European sensibility, creating what historians call the "Camargue Western" or "French Western."
Following the successful model of Nick Carter, the series was released in October 1908 (just one month after Carter's debut), consolidating the format of independent "chapters" that utilized the same hero.
Riffle Bill was an almost literal copy of Buffalo Bill, maintaining the aesthetic of the wide-brimmed hat, long hair, and elite shooting skills.
With Riffle Bill, Victorin-Hippolyte Jasset
is credited with creating one of the first prototypes of the serialized Western genre, long before the genre became the backbone of the Hollywood industry.
As a highlight of its visual aesthetic, it is noted that Jasset used outdoor locations (often in the Camargue region or on the outskirts of Paris) to simulate the American prairies, which was an innovation in an era dominated by painted studio sets.
Although the series was French, it sought to emulate the style of the pulp magazines from the American publisher Street & Smith (the same as Nick Carter), which already published Buffalo Bill stories. Éclair used this literary connection to give an air of "American authenticity" to the French production.
Currently, as is the case with Nick Carter, there are no complete episodes of Riffle Bill available for public viewing (YouTube or streaming). The material is part of the preservation archive of the Cinémathèque Française and the Éclair collection, being rarely screened outside of restoration festivals such as Il Cinema Ritrovato.
